Heifer International Project
At St. Andrews, part of our mission is ministering to the spiritual, physical, and emotional needs of all people. This means people in our church, our community, our region, and the world.
Christ Bearers
This ministry extends Holy Communion to homebound and infirm members of the St. Andrews community. Specially trained “Christ Bearers” take communion to these members each week. This service is in addition to regular pastoral visits.
Emergency Action Teams
These teams take action to help a member or family in the community during a crisis. Teams provide meals, transportation, or other services. St. Andrews has sixteen teams, each with a leader to notifiy members and coordinate service.
Hospital Visitations
The Hospital Visitation group visits members and friends of St. Andrews who are in the hospital.
Prayer Ministry
A ministry where intercessory prayer and praise is offered on behalf of individuals, the congregation, and the world. This ministry supports more than 500 prayer requests a year. The prayers are made every day for three months unless otherwise requested. Contact Sara Hench, Kim Stabley, or Barbara DAversa to make a request.
Prayers & Squares - The Prayer Quilt Ministry
An international, interfaith outreach ministry that combines the gift of prayer with the gift of a hand tied quilt. St. Andrews became a chapter 187 in March of 2004. What makes each quilt so special is not the pattern, color or workmanship, but the fact that prayer is tied into each knot. These quilts are a channel of Gods grace and love, a statement of faith and a testimony to our belief in the power of prayer.
Stephen Ministers
Stephen Ministers are trained members of the congregation who are available for a weekly visit to offer love and support in a time of need. Whether it is goal setting, family problems, personal issues, or job difficulties, Stephen Ministers are there to listen to you and help you in a non-judgemental, caring, Christian atmosphere. All sessions are confidential. If you feel a Stephen Minister could help you, please contact the pastor for a referral.
Tape Ministry
Members of this group record worship every Sunday and hand deliver tapes to everyone who requests them. This wonderful ministry, along with Christ Bearers, supports our homebound members and friends.
AA / Friends of Bill W
St. Andrews opens its doors to several AA meetings a week: Sunday 6:00 PM, Monday 10:30 AM and 6:00 PM, Tuesday 6:00 PM, Friday 10:30 AM and 8:00 PM.
Interfaith Shelter
St. Andrews hosts a group of homeless men and women for two weeks each year. (Other churches provide shelter the rest of the year.) Guests stay at St. Andrews facilities with members as hosts. St. Andrews members also provide meals and transportation during the two weeks.
Lutheran Social Services
Lutheran Social Services provides emergency assistance programs in San Diego county for the poor and homeless. LSS also helps the jobless through job readiness training, temporary employment, and resume preparation. St. Andrews enthusiastically participates in the annual LSS walkathon, which raises money for this worthy organization. St. Andrews also provides food donations to LSS.
SHARE (Self-Help and Resource Exchange)
SHARE is a food distribution program in which St. Andrew participates and serves as a distribution site. SHARE provides a nutritious monthly food package at half cost in exchange for two hours community service. Both members and non-members in the community participate in this program.
Emanuel Orphanage (Tijuana)
This orphanage in Tijuana, Mexico is a boys orphanage with about 50 boys. St. Andrews provides regular donations for clothing, blankets, food, and cleaning supplies.
Habitat for Humanity
St. Andrews members support this organization by helping build houses in Baja throughout the year.
Lutheran Border/Third World Concerns
This group reaches out to the needy that live in third world areas both local and abroad. One way St. Andrews supports this ministry is through an annual Super Bowl Blanket drive.
Senior Gleaners
A group of people 55 years of age and older that gathers food from all sources which would otherwise be wasted. The food is distributed to about 35 agencies throughout San Diego.
Alternative Christmas
Each Christmas, St. Andrews provides members and friends with an alternative to the usual buying frenzy. You can give a donation to a local or national charity in honor of a loved one. Some of the ministries and organizations supported by Alternative Christmas are: Heifer Project, Lutheran Social Services, Emanuel Orphange in Tijuana, St. Andrews Youth, Habitat for Humanity, and Floresta.
Heifer International Project
This organization, founded in 1944, helps families world-wide fight hunger by providing food and income-producing animals. This project encourages self-reliance and helps people build self-esteem. St. Andrews supports Heifer Project by collecting quarters (note the collection tube in the narthex) and through Alternative Christmas. In addition, the Keenagers (senior group) sells Heifer International Christmas cards to raise money for this organization.
